SF Giants beat Padres In 10 Innings And Giants Trust Doval Despite loss

Hicks Pitched 10 Innings In A 3-2 loss To The San Diego Padres

Doval gave up his first two earned runs in nearly two months and lost his first save since reentering the closer’s role, helping the Giants lose 3-2 in 10 innings to the San Diego Padres at Oracle Park on Tuesday night.

Doval a One-Time All-Star

Doval, a one-time All-Star, did not allow a single earned run in his next 21 outings (20 2/3 innings), the longest such streak of his career. With Ryan Walker struggling to replicate last season’s dominance, Melvin appointed Doval as the team’s new closer during a three-city road trip. Doval capitalized on his first two chances in the closer’s role, recording a pair of four-out saves against the Marlins in Miami. His first opportunity in San Francisco wasn’t so successful.

Doval’s Performance In 2024 Was Poor

After becoming an MLB All-Star in 2023, Doval’s performance in 2024 was poor, causing him to lose the closer’s role. But except for a bad stretch in early April, Doval has been great for the Giants this year. Ropp doesn’t expect one poor performance to change that.

After Ropp’s shutout outing, Giants relievers Eric Miller and Tyler Rogers ran into some trouble. After the Padres loaded the bases in the seventh, Miller escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam when Arce grounded out to third. The Padres’ offense threatened once again in the eighth, but Rogers also escaped trouble without giving up any runs.

Hicks On Injured list, Hazell Recalled

Prior to Tuesday night’s game, the Giants placed right-hander Jordan Hicks on the 15-day injured list (effective June 2) because of inflammation in his right big toe.

In the same sequence, the Giants recalled right-handed reliever Sean Hazell from Triple-A Sacramento.

Hicks, 28, suffered the injury on June 1 while playing against the Miami Marlins, where he walked three batters and struck out one.
