Stavanger (Norway): World champion D Gukesh’s disappointing performance continued in the Norway Chess Tournament and he suffered a defeat to compatriot Arjun Erigasi in the second round. With this brilliant victory, Erigasi has reached the joint top position.
Magnus Carlsen defeated in Armageddon tie-break
In another important match of the second round, Hikaru Nakamura defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen in the Armageddon tie-break. Carlsen had defeated Gukesh in the first round.
Gukesh, who is considered a strong contender for the title in the six-player double round robin open category, is at the bottom of the points table after losing the first two rounds.
Indian player Erigasi
World number four Indian player Erigassi is tied at the top with American Grandmaster Nakamura with 4.5 points.

Erigasi, playing with white pieces, took the lead in the beginning, but Gukesh’s strong defense brought the match to a draw in the end. In the end, the match became exciting, but due to less time, Gukesh came under pressure and Erigasi took advantage of this and was successful in winning the match that lasted more than four hours in 62 moves.
Erigasi had also defeated Gukesh in Tata Steel Chess earlier this year. He has an excellent record of 6-0 against Gukesh in classical chess.
This 21-year-old player had scored 1.5 points by defeating China’s Wei Yi in Armageddon on Monday.
Erigasi was surprised as to why Gukesh took so much time in the initial moves, due to which he came under time pressure. Just before the 17th move, Gukesh found that he was more than an hour behind his opponent.
Arigasi said, “I am a little surprised why Gukesh wasted so much time in the beginning.”
Arigasi will play Fabiano Caruana in the third round, while Gukesh will hope to make a comeback against Nakamura, one of the best players in rapid and blitz chess.

In the women’s category, both the Indian players disappointed. Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk registered a brilliant win over two-time world rapid champion Koneru Humpy. R Vaishali lost to China’s Tingji Lei in the Armageddon game.
In the scoring system of the tournament, the winner in the classical format gets three points. If the classical game is drawn, the players get one point each and then in the Armageddon they play for half a point.
